What should I expect on my first visit?
The first step is to complete the new patient paperwork which can be accessed online on the website and can be completed at home. On the first visit, a thorough consultation will be completed where we will go through your case history paperwork in detail, and discuss your goals. A chiropractic examination will then be performed. Next, we will review your findings and a customized treatment plan will be laid out for you based on your specific needs.
What is Chiropractic/how does it work?
Chiropractic is a natural, holistic form of health care that works to restore proper function throughout the body. It does this by removing spinal misalignments, also known as subluxations.
The spine is a vital component of the central nervous system, which controls and coordinates all human functioning. For any function to occur, your brain has to signal down through your spine, and out through the nerves. Therefore, any time there is a spinal misalignment, it is going to interfere and irritate the nerves. Ultimately, this causes dysfunction in the body. This can cause an array of health issues far beyond pain such as headaches, tingling/numbness, digestive problems, insomnia, fertility problems, decreased organ functioning, a weakened immune system, and so on.
We get spinal misalignments from life stressors, traumas, and toxins. Once a misalignment is detected, chiropractors remove it by what is called a spinal adjustment. This is a quick, specific, manipulation of the joint back into its proper position, which in turn takes pressure off of the nerve, removes interference, and allows the body to function at a more optimal level.
Who can benefit from chiropractic care?
Because chiropractic works to restore function and support general health and wellness, anyone can benefit from care. In the office, I have worked with brand new infants to patients in their 90’s. We all have a spine, and therefore, it is important to maintain the health of it to ensure proper functioning.
Will I have to continue to go back for treatment?
This depends on what you want out of care. Chiropractic care is ultimately about maintenance and improving your overall health. Many of us are great when it comes to the maintenance of our cars, but not always so great when it comes to caring for our own bodies and our health. That being said, if you are looking to stay healthy and prevent chronic health conditions, then coming in for maintenance chiropractic care is recommended – No different than going to the dentist for maintenance cleaning. For chiropractic care, maintenance adjustments are typically performed 1-2 times per month, but differ for each person.
If you are just looking for short term relief, a few adjustments may help, but just be aware that the symptoms and health issues are likely to return. I will always give you my best recommendations as to frequency, but the choice is always going to be up to you whether or not you wish to continue care.
Is the treatment painful?
No, treatment is not painful. The adjustments are quick, gentle, safe, and typically provide relief. If you here a popping or cracking sound, this is totally normal, and is caused by gas releasing from the joint, resulting from the pressure change in the joint space. There are a variety of different techniques that can be used to accommodate personal preference. You may experience slight soreness in your muscles the night after an adjustment or the next morning. This is no different than experiencing muscle soreness after a workout.
Are chiropractic adjustments safe for children?
Yes. In fact, it is one of the safest forms of care for children, and the earlier we are able to detect a spinal issue in a child, the better. The techniques used on infants and children are much different than techniques used on adults. Often times, the mother can hold an infant while the adjustment is performed for more comfort.
Are chiropractic adjustments safe during pregnancy?
Yes, chiropractic adjustments are highly encouraged throughout pregnancy. This helps to balance the pelvis throughout the pregnancy and support the body’s structural changes during the process. Chiropractic care also helps to provide a more comfortable delivery for both the mother and the baby.
